Significance of Letter Writing:

The habit of writing letters was widely prevalent in the earlier generations and some of the letters have become priceless documents of the nation. The letters exchanged between Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and his daughter, Smt. Indira Gandhi, had become a book in itself. The letters written by Mahatma Gandhi were about to be auctioned recently and Government of India intervened to preserve it as a national document. Such is the importance attached to letters.

Many individuals preserve the letters received from their parents or from their children, which enable them to emotionally relive the moments many decades later. However, the advent of email and SMS has largely denied the habit of writing letters. These two technological advancements definitely help in instant communication. However the element of personal/emotional touch can be best given only through personal communications.

To inculcate the habit of letter writing among school children, India Post has decided to conduct a Letter Writing Competition.
