The Department of Posts has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)
with Unique identification Authority of India (UIDAI) to become a
Registrar for enrolment process for issue of UID cards (Aadhaar
cards).
UIDAI’s mandate is to issue every resident a unique identification
number linked to the resident's demographic and biometric
information, which they can use to identify themselves anywhere in
India, and to access a host of benefits and services.
With Aadhaar, a resident will be able to prove his identity for
various purposes like opening bank account, availing health
services, getting mobile connection etc. Enrolment process by the
Department of Posts has commenced in many states in the country.
Tamil Nadu Postal Circle, which covers both Tamil Nadu State and
Pondicherry UT, has proposed to commence the enrolment in Tamil Nadu.
Enrolment of residents for Aadhaar cards was launched at Anna
